Description
Leaves 35 - 40 cm long, petioles usually as long as the blades. Blades very variable; usually cordate, at the tip blunt or hardly acuminate, at the base shallowly lobate, or oval, ovate or nearly lanceolate. All forms can be found on the same plant. Blades 13cm long x 2.5 - 8cm wide, without pellucid lines. It is the only species with relatively short, cordate blades without pellucid markings and with a creeping habit.
Stem creeping, up to 50cm long, proliferous. Inflorescence racemose, rarely branched in the lower whorl, having 2 - 3(7) whorls containing only 3 - 6 flowers each. Bracts shorter, as long as or longer than the pedicels. Pedicels usually 1-(2) cm long, sometimes only 2 - 4 mm long or nearly absent. Flowers white, stamens 24-28, corolla 2.5 - 3.5 cm in diameter. Achenes about 2 mm long, with several ribs and (1) - 2 - 3 lateral glands or without them.

var. nulliglandulosus Rataj in Darwiniana 16(1 - 2) 25, 1970 from at least Argentina. Nutlets without glands. nb. Christel Kasselmann lists this as synonym.
A reddish form called rose is sold in the aquarium trade and described as a hybrid between Echinodorus uruguayensis and Echinodorus aschersonianus.
